The certification by EUROPARC Federation, the largest network of European protected areas, and serves as an internationally recognized tool for fostering thoughtful and environmentally friendly tourism development in protected natural areas. To date, Ķemeri National Park in Latvia has successfully received and renewed this certification multiple times.
Following the submission of the application, it will be evaluated by a commission from the EUROPARC Federation, which will include a planned visit to Gauja National Park next year. The decision regarding the awarding of the Sustainable Tourism Charter will be announced by October 2025.
Obtaining the certification will also benefit businesses operating in Gauja National Park, enabling them to attract new clients and establish partnerships with entrepreneurs and organizations abroad.
Gauja National Park, established on September 14, 1973, is the largest and oldest national park in Latvia. It's purpose is to protect the unique natural values of the Gauja River Valley and its surroundings while ensuring both recreational opportunities and nature conservation functions within the territory. Additionally, this year marks the 30th anniversary of the park's membership in the EUROPARC Federation.
Gauja National Park has a long-standing tradition of tourism. Today, the park hosts a robust and closely connected network of tourism and hospitality service providers.
We extend our gratitude to Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences researchers Agita Līviņa and Andris Klepers, as well as expert Rolands Auziņš, for their significant contributions to the development of the certification documentation.
